On Controlling the Cost of Divorce [2010-06-10]

"First of all, people need to be educated about the different ways of getting a divorce. Many attorneys aren’t trained, for example, in the 'collaborative approach' to divorce, where neutral parties are brought in—including a therapist and a CDFA—to try and keep the divorce from going to court. I wish I had tried this approach with my own divorce; it could have been a lot simpler," he notes. "Also, before a couple starts arguing about money, it is important for them to be clear on what their actual financial situation is. They need to be acting from a point of clarity, not one of confusion and fear. A good CDFA can help them do that."
